In a reportedly exciting development, the University of Notre Dame Football Program headed by Coach Brian Kelly is changing uniforms. As these words are written just a few hours before the scheduled start of the Irish game against Purdue, the Notre Dame Football Team is also scheduled to exchange their old uniforms for new ones designed by Under Armour, Inc. for this game (kind of like an oldies major league baseball game, except that these are newsies not oldies).
Under Arm "has made a name for itself with undergarments." Marc Tracy, "Tradition, Redesigned" p. B10, col. 1 (New York Times Nat'l ed., "SportsFriday" Section, Friday, September 12, 2014), published online with a less accurate title. This made the company a natural fit for Mr. Kelly's recruits.
"One of the things we bring to Notre Dame is, as they're starting to recruit athletes and engage their fan base, we're a young innovative brand." Mr. Matthew C. Murchin, the corporation's Executive Vice President for Global Marketing, quoted by Marc Tracy, "Tradition, Redesigned," supra. The terms of the deal were not disclosed by either the corporation or the university including the Football Department.
Under Arm has set out to preserve history by changing it. For the first time ever, the famed Notre Dame Football Team's gold helmets will wear an embedded shamrock and apparently the ND logo for a chaser. The jerseys will wear the Under Arm logo near, well, the under arm in front, and the ND logo on the side. See Marc Tracy, "Tradition, Redesigned," and the photographs accompanying that New York Times article, supra.
Further developments will be discussed in future articles including articles to be published here. There are many changes to look at.
In the interim, there is no word on the percentage of the Under Armour deal which might be channeled toward anyone not employed there. No-one has asked so far as is publicly known.
The undergarment designer's uniform changes apparently are being paid by student tuitions, although this much is also unclear. Again, no-one has asked so far as is publicly known.
So far.
